Engaging a new habit can make you feel a whole lot better. And good news – it only needs to be lil' to make a big difference.
Want to try out a new daily habit? I've got a few suggestions.
Here's one:
Turn your attention to the little everyday YAYs that are already showing up in your life and then write them down.
You can download this Daily Gratitude Tracker or use a blank notebook to create a Gratitude Journal. A journal allows you to reflect deeply on a specific YAY or even consider what your life would be like without it. Let yourself be surprised by all of the details you can recall.
“Your brain is a reward detector. As you go about your life, your sensory nervous system is continuously monitoring which actions satisfy your desires and deliver pleasure. Feelings of pleasure and disappointment are part of the feedback mechanism that helps your brain distinguish useful actions from useless ones. ” JAMES CLEAR, Author of “Atomic Habits”
REWARD = YAY
Savoring your YAY is not only central to a happier life, it is essential in order to build on the habits that work for you. So how f'd up is it when we do all the hard stuff and then skip the best part, mindlessly moving on to a new task or squashing the YAY with harsh judgement.
Instead of denying your feel-goods, amplify them with your willingness and curiosity. Be curious about the various shades of YAY in your life and be willing to acknowledge and savor them as they appear.
When you make a daily habit of tracking your YAY, you should notice a positive shift immediately.
